What is the MAKERS MOVEMENT?
“A technological and creative revolution using technology to make, repair & customize the things we need. It also overlaps with children’s natural inclination to learn by doing.”
– Dale Dougherty, Founder, Make Magazine
What are Makerspaces?
A makerspace is a physical location where people gather to share resources and knowledge, work on projects, network, and build.
Makerspaces provide tools and space in a community environment – a library, community centre, private organization, or campus.
Makerspace and STEM
STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications.
From STEM to STEAM
STEM + Art = STEAM
What is STEAM?
Art + Design are poised to transform our economy in the 21st century just as science and technology did in the last century.
We need to add Art + Design to transform STEM into STEAM.
The objective of the STEAM is to place Art + Design at the center of STEM, encourage integration of Art + Design in K–12 education.
STEAM Maker Spaces
The maker community brings children, hobbyists and professionals together in celebration of personal expression.
Making is not just a novelty or a trend — it’s a stance toward learning. It’s a conviction that problems are made to be solved, challenges are fun and “doing” is what matters.
Designing and Making are ‘minds-on’ and ‘hands-on activities that help integrate the various disciplines of the school curriculum – Science , Mathematics and the Arts. Here, both analysis and synthesis, creative and critical thinking are required for problem-solving which is by nature inter-disciplinary. They make learning in schools more relevant to every day life and work, leisure, hobbies and fun.
